Dr James Bushell
Education Summary.
Following internship in 1991 at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, I completed a Surgical RMO year at the Royal Adelaide Hospital.
I became one of the first Rural Stream GP Trainees (now called Registrars) in the South Australian RACGP Training program. I completed basic training posts at Tailem Bend and Kadina.
I completed 12 months Obstetrics training 6 months of which was in the UK at Good Hope Hospital , Sutton Coldfield.
The other 6 months training was at Modbury hospital.
It was at Modbury hospital I also trained for 12 months as a Surgical registrar.
With my new procedural skills in Obstetrics and Surgery I was very excited to get a 6 month advanced GP training post in Millicent in 1996.
20 years later I am now a Partner at the same clinic.
Current Medical Interests
Obstetrics.
Unfortunately Millicent hospital ceased delivering babies in 2014 however I maintain my interest in all aspects of Obstetrics. I am are able to do full antenatal care for uncomplicated pregnancies. If a pregnant woman has issues needing specialist care we are able to make referrals to specialist Obstetricians in Mount Gambier.
Surgery.
I have had a fortnightly surgical list in Millicent for the last 20 years. Due to the demand for good skin cancer care I have specialised in this area. I have completed multiple skin cancer workshops and attended many conferences, and recently relieved a Certificate in Skin Cancer Medicine with the recently formed Skin Cancer College of Australasia.
I perform full skin checks as recommended by the College.
Any suspicious skin lesions can be biopsied and lesions can be excised in the Clinic , at Millicent hospital or be referred on for even more specialised care.
I also perform Vasectomies, excision of cysts and benign lumps , and operations for in grown toe nails.
Education.
For the last 15 years I have enjoyed teaching GP Registrars and Medical Students. I studied for certificate in Clinical education at Flinders University and hold Academic Status as a Clinical Lecturer.
I enjoy all aspects of being a Rural Doctor. I have been on the Millicent hospital emergency roster for the last 20 years and find this the most challenging aspect of Rural Practice. Palliative care is a very important part of my work as it allows patients ,whom I have often known for many years, the ability to die with dignity and in peace.
Other Interests.
I am a very keen lover of the ocean. I have windsurfed since the age of 12.
I taught myself to kite surf over 12 years ago. I also enjoy stand up paddle surfing when the winds not blowing.
I enjoy cycling and bushwalking.
My partner Vittoria and I have 2 furry babies “Monkee and Cricket”, very spoilt Cavoodle sisters.
